Message from Stephen Earle, author of Heaven’s Wind
Greetings, and thank you for visiting the Heaven’s Wind website. This book has been over fifteen years in the making and draws on some thirty-five years of engagement with Nakamura Tempū‘s story and teachings. I am eternally grateful to all the people in Japan, North America, Europe, China, India, and Nepal who have assisted and supported me in the process, and I am delighted to have North Atlantic Books as my publisher.
My interest in Nakamura Tempū was sparked in the early 1980s while studying the martial art of aikido under Tada Hiroshi Shihan in Tokyo. Tada-sensei was a longtime student of Tempū’s shin-shin tōitsu-do and incorporated many of its essential practices into his aikido pedagogy. Later I discovered books about Nakamura Tempū by authors Uno Chiyo and Ōi Mitsuru and then graduated to the collected transcripts of Tempū’s talks published in several volumes under his name. Back in Japan in 2004, I joined the Tempūkai, the organization dedicated to preserving and disseminating Tempū’s work, and had the great joy and privilege of participating in many of their retreats and weekend trainings.
Tempū’s teachings, I believe, are unique among disciplines of self-realization and self-development. Above all, they are eminently mature yet imbued with an earthy practicality. His is a time-tested and proven methodology for meeting the challenges of life head-on and for generating vitality and passion independent of one’s circumstances. In recognizing the duality of mind and body, the needs of both of which must be met if we as individuals are to realize our true potential, Tempū points imperatively to the agency of being that governs both mind and body but is beholden to neither. Thus, it is in the act of discovery—of uncovering who it is we really are—that mind and body are indelibly integrated, forging a unified whole.
Heaven’s Wind tells the story of this remarkable luminary for the first time in English. It shows how Tempū on his journey to spiritual liberation also engaged fully with his times. He participated in and contributed substantially to the unfolding of many of the major events that have shaped Japan and East Asia during the early half of the twentieth century, and his story is also the story of that history. In Heaven’s Wind, I have undertaken a three-fold mission: I have sought not only to make real the man and his teachings but also to shed new light on how our modern world came to be.
All of life is an adventure. In my case, that adventure has included an extraordinarily fortunate encounter with Tempū’s story and the wisdom of his teachings, and I am humbly honored and privileged to bring that story and those teachings to light for readers of English in the form of this book. I would enjoy hearing from you. To send questions or comments, or to be included on my emailing list, please contact me through the form provided below.
